Rod Ashman

Rod Ashman was head of art and design at Pate’s Grammar School, Cheltenham where he taught full time for over 38 years. He studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton, Cheltenham and Birmingham.

Recently retired Rod is now able to devote all his time to developing his own artwork. At present his main interest is landscape and seascape subjects. Various visits to Cornwall this year have provided him with inspiration for his latest paintings. Rod has been involved in many group exhibitions over the years and has also had a number of solo exhibitions.

“I try to express a feeling of what I see, an interpretation rather than a copy. I paint in a gestural way. The application of paint, the surface and mark making are all important.”

Many of his larger, freely painted works are derived from preliminary drawings. He is constantly experimenting and believes “it’s necessary to take risks in order to develop; I have to be confident enough to make mistakes, to rely on my emotional response and have the courage of my convictions.”
